We were either 29th or 30th in a league of 30 teams, we were in a 25-year-old arena, that part of this was how do we get a new arena built? You sound super excited about the future. So, I'm, as you know, extremely excitable and just want to kind of attack it and love the challenge. So, whole different world kind of came around with COVID. The people part is always tough. And how do we capture that, both digitally and on broadcast? You buy the Bucks, you help with that whole negotiation and you were living in New York, so you were married already and you decided. Its like you think about what the culture of community is. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think it's kind of where is the balance? Then she just starts laughing. Weve got Peter Feigin. The Bucks are currently in position to make the playoffs for the second straight year and third time in four years since Feigin and friends took over. These guys are human beings. Michael Red: You talked about Coach Bud and the whole team organization, which I think Coach Bud has done a terrific job thus far. I mean, I probably publicly spoke for the first time in my life 100 times in the first 200 days to everybody from Lions Clubs to the barber shop, to the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts to kind of preach how big a deal it is for city this size to have and keep an NBA team. Right? As you said, because of your mom and dads background, and because you had some of the rock stars of industry, as you say, Masters of the Universe, as your partners, you got to meld your experiences, your parents coaching, and then the rock stars came and they were also, you got a perfect soup of business experience to create this amazing success story. John: By the way, weve got with us today, Peter Feigin, hes the president of the Milwaukee Bucks. I encourage it, and selfishly, its a fun way to network and deal with people. Although he has made a career of being in high-powered executive positions, he doesn't necessarily dress the part all the time. Theres a lot of people that look up to you and want to be either the next Peter Feigin, or be an entrepreneur and do a startup. It was important for us for our players, for our organization, for the city to stand up. John: Whos raising their hand saying Dad, were all in with you. How does this work? Peter Feigin: So, my job is pretty simple, like how do I build the trust with them? John: Thats so great. And you do it, for us, kind of my job was to be that rock and support and think about if you told me that 50% of my time would be spent on making sure everybody is okay. Back when the Feigins (now teenage) sons were much younger, Lasry suspected that Peter or Dan would give them a secret signal to scamper onto the floor if their team was losing. And they were kind of stuck at the last minute deep in the summer. How do we work together? So, Giannis and I have an interesting relationship and sometimes I need him, sometimes he needs me. When you are visioning this out, like you just said, human capital, a new physical capital, on the court, off the court, what were you using both singularly as you, as Peter Feigin goes, but also with your partners and the private equity guys, what were you using as your role model? It keeps on changing, but we've got to be able to pivot and understand when we're out of balance. We have resources, we back them up, whatever you need, it's part of it. I think weve gravitated again with a lot of people weve brought in to engage and get it done. Defenders are responsible for calling fouls. Peter: We like to be, delusionally optimistic. Michael Red: Well, I love you back. Michael Red: It's been wonderful to watch. I mean, that's like, I mean, literally over and over and over again, relentlessly, the whole team to get it done. Peter: Oh, my goodness. I think probably one of the last public-private partnerships that thatll happen, when Troy brought together the city, the county and the state to put together a partnership for a new arena in downtown Milwaukee. Peter Feigin: No. How do we keep driving? But there are also long-range shooters who work in retail sales and small forwards who direct nonprofits, photographers and writers, students and teachers. So it was kind of building rapport and trust was the only way to kind of get this done. Youre unbelievably inspirational. Why shouldn't we resemble the city we work and live in, instead of kind of what national things are? So, that part of it was awesome. When Khris was a rookie, I said, "Do you know whose jersey you wearing?" I suggested a lot of people who would be great presidents, and lo and behold, none of them worked out to do it, so I think they had to default to me to run the company.". And I think what happened in this year, in so many ways, was a great splash of ice water thinking like, "Boy, we got a long way to go." Peter: Im fairly, my mom was immersed in data analytics before data and analytics was business intelligence. In 2014, Bucks President Peter Feigin lost his father to congestive heart failure. Make a long story short, we probably spent the next 10 years having the most incredible adventures of going to do due diligence on teams that he was prospecting to buy.
